Other pet portraits

Cats and dogs are a popular choice but any pet can be immortalised on canvas. From horses and farm animals to rabbits, hamsters, guinea pigs, fish, reptiles and birds, like Pickle the cockatiel below! No animal is too weird and wonderful to be painted.

Dog Portraits

Here are two examples of dogs painted using acrylic paints and texture paste.

The portrait on the left of Abi, a miniature schnauzer, used a number of high quality photos for reference.

Pet Portraits

Kate has been creating pet portraits to sell since 2002 when a neighbour spotted some of her artwork and asked her to create a dog portrait for her. This pet portrait lead onto other dog portraits and soon more neighbours wanted their pets portraits painted too.

Since then Kate has been commissioned to do pet portraits for birthday and Christmas gifts or for owners to remember their much loved animal, portraits of dogs of all sorts of breeds, portraits of cats and even a pet parrot. Portraits of pets can be full body or head and shoulders with plain backgrounds or posing in their favourite spot. Collars and favourite toys can be included too. Portrait pets make excellent presents as they are unique and personal gifts.

If you would like a custom pet portrait painting, first assemble a collection of photos and choose your favourite pose. Next decide what size you would like and whether you want the portrait to be in coloured pastel or acrylic paint.

Backgrounds can be added in or left plain, so for instance, you may want them on a cushion or by the sea. Custom pet portraits can be assembled from different photographs. Photos can be sent via email, or through the post as prints, or on CD. If possible photos should be taken outside in natural daylight or if would like to use a photograph taken by a professional photographer then please ask for their permission.

Cat portraits

You can choose to have a head portrait or a full body. These cat portraits illustrate how much artistic license you have with a painting as opposed to a photograph. Titus, bottom left, was a head only study, Gilbert was a cat who liked to sit on the fence so the plants were added for interest, and Jazy is seated on her favourite chair.

These portraits were completed in soft pastel and framed behind glass. This is what the owner had to say about the portrait on the left: He's so lifelike it made me cry. It's my Titus to a "T" - his soulful eyes follow me round the room, I love it!

These other dog portraits were drawn using coloured pastels on 150gsm pastel paper, sizes from 12x16" and prices from £200 plus p&p. Names of pets, a collar or tag can be added to the picture for no extra cost.

Abi (above) was painted on MDF board size 36 x 28cm.

The portrait on the right of Freeway and Bee Bee were painted also using a number of different photos in order to get the right pose for each of them. The more detail in the photos, the higher the quality of the final painting.
